Today not only did I try something new, I learnt a life lesson. Never chicken out and change your mind, or you may miss out on a new pleasure!
Last night plans were made to for us to have lunch today at Slater’s 50/50 Burger and Sports bar in Pasadena.
It was going to be a new taste sensation only by the fact that, as the name suggests, the burgers were 50% Beef, and 50% bacon. Who does not love bacon? This morning, I checked out the menu on the Slater’s 50/50 website and found they do a wide range of specialty burgers including a Peanut Butter and Strawberry Jelly beef and bacon burger. This appealed to my savory and sweet taste bud needs, but also scared me a little.
When we arrived, our lunch companions had already ordered some appetizers for us, just some onion rings and some mac ‘n’ cheese balls (with bacon bits obviously).
These were a delicious starter, but when the time came to order the burger, I chickened out and asked for the 1/3lb 50/50 classic. If V, who had organised the lunch had not started a conversation with our server, (who was very helpful, very chatty and deserved his tip) about the PB&J burger and how good people found it, I would have stuck with my choice, but our server insisted that the PB&J burger always surprised people in a good way. A moment of madness, a moment of weakness? I changed my mind and decided to be adventurous. My order was changed, there was no going back.
The burgers came in good time, and to our table came . . . . . ..
The B B B Bacon burger, delightfully stacked with extra bacon and an egg. Two of these were ordered along with the
Hawaiian burger, a mixture of burger, spam (yes a UK throwback to ration days, but spam is consumed in huge amounts in Hawaii) with an egg and pineapple mayo.
Finally we come to the . . . . . . . . . . . .
Peanut Butter and Jellousy burger. What you are seeing here, is not tomato ketchup oozing out of the honey wheat bun, but Strawberry Jello, (Jam for my UK followers). The burger was made up of 50%beef, 50% bacon patty, resting on strawberry jelly, topped with peanut butter loaded bacon all on a honey wheat bun.
All I can say about this burger is, if you ever find yourself in Pasadena, on North Raymond Avenue, go to Slater’s, and order this burger. The salty, sweet, meaty mixture, is truly a taste sensation that needs to go on anyone’s and everyone’s foodie bucket list.
It was a great visit, perfect for a fun lunchtime treat, excellent customer service and a real taste sensation. My only disappointment was that I was so full up, I couldn’t manage a desert and I had my eye on the Bacon Brownie. Its a good job that they let me get one to go.
Lunch was over 6 hours ago now, I am still full up, but my Bacon Brownie is in the refrigerator, calling my name. As soon as I can, I will delve in , taste it and report back!
After lunch we took a visit to Intellegentsia, a very hip and happening coffee shop located on East Colorado Blvd, for some great coffee. This was our second visit here, we had come previously in October, and found the coffee was once again, smooth, tasty and much better value than your regular coffee chains!
All in all, a great day for food consumption!!
